Uniquely Lasered was contacted by Aboriginal Learning, SD42 to create manipulatives to support a curricular project called Salish Weave.  Salish Weave is art created by First Nation artists and the art was donated to several districts throughout the lower mainland to help teachers teach about the diversity and significance of First Nation Art.

The First Nation shapes were created to support student learning and will be used to help students understand the differences between Salish art and Northwest Coast art.  In the past, Aboriginal Learning would painstakingly cut out felt pieces so students could use these shapes to explore symmetry, patterns, movement (through design), positive and negative shapes and connect some of these ideas to the pieces in the Salish Weave kit.

These wooden pieces will be used not only as a part of the Salish Weave project but could also be used to support math, adst and art in all classrooms.

Uniquely Lasered understands cultural appropriation.  We want to make it clear that Aboriginal Learning contacted us and that we worked with Aboriginal Resource Teachers to make these shapes.
